Short-Form Digital Storytelling

I teach a production course during the January term at Colby College. Through hands-on learning and analysis, students critique current popular short-form videos and create their own short-form digital stories. They learn the basics of production (lighting, shot composition and audio), the basics of storytelling (scriptwriting, storyboarding, timing, and pacing), and the basics of editing (Final Cut Pro X).

Students learn through practice: each produces a 1-2 visual narrative, a 2-3 minute digital mash-up, and a 5-minute documentary portrait. Students are also assigned a genre of web-video in order to write a "manifesto" defining how future iterations of the form should be created.
